In 2021, Leah Roman, MPH, MCHES, Vinu Ilakkuvan, DrPH, Laura Runnels, and Ke’alohilani Worthington, MPH set out to understand the self-employed public health consultant and entrepreneur workforce in the United States.
Here’s what they discovered about this group:
Who are they?
• 92% female
• 74% white
• 95% have a graduate degree
• 50% are doing it full time
How much money do they make?
• majority use hourly pricing structure (avg: USD$120/hr)
• Net income = $80K+ for those pursuing consulting/entrepreneurship full-time ($28K for part-time)
Where did they find clients?
• most popular to least: non-profits > academic institutions> other consultants > government agencies
Biggest struggles when starting a business?
1. Setting up
2. Navigating the transition to entrepreneurship
3. Getting clients/work
